You change the filter, nobody checks the rest

An access panel comes off a condenser and the inside is open. A study made for a heating and cooling company. It took two motion takes, and the failed one produced the most portable rule we have found for any service business.

A study, made for a category rather than a named business. Client work appears here only once the client has seen it and agreed.

01

The brief

Homeowners believe they maintain their system because they change the filter. The filter is the one part they can reach. Everything the system actually fails on sits behind a panel they have never had off, which is a gap between belief and reality that a picture can close faster than a sentence.

02

The picture

Two gloved hands lift the service panel away and the interior is exposed: copper line-set, coil, wiring on a terminal block. Flat overcast light so the inside reads as detail rather than a dark hole. It passed the plate stage at four out of four.

03

The take that failed

The plate was right and the first motion take was still wrong. The panel came away within half a second and the hands withdrew, leaving roughly seven seconds of a static open machine. Recovery fell to three of four. The fault was ours, not the model's: we had copied a contemplative structure from an interiors brief into a category where the hands are the service.

04

The rule

A withdrawn hand turns a service clip into a still life of equipment, and nobody sells a service by photographing the tools. Holding still on a room suits a place. A service needs a person doing the work, continuously, to the final frame. The second take keeps the gloves working for the whole eight seconds and ends mid-task rather than on a tidy resolution.

05

The result

All three finished cuts recovered the category from four of four judges and scored four out of five for clarity. The variant on this page carries the highest scroll-stop rating of any spot we have produced, which suggests a working hand is not merely legible but the most watchable thing we have put in a frame.

Measured

What the test said.

Every piece is shown to four different models with the sound off and the captions stripped, and each is asked one question: what is this selling? The numbers below are those answers, including the ones that went against us.

Category recovered, no captions
4 of 4 judges
Clarity, finished cuts
4.00 of 5, all three variants
Scroll-stop
3.25, our highest measured
First take, hands withdrawing
3 of 4 recovery
Motion takes required
Two

The clearest evidence we have that a correct picture is not enough on its own. The plate scored full marks and the first film made from it still failed.
